Horizon elementary school wanted to turn an enclosed courtyard into a functional instructional area where students would be able to conduct science projects involving eco systems and the study of the life cycle of insects, specifically butterflies

A teacher at Horizon approached Boy Scout Troop 572 and requested that the troop coordinate the effort, which included securing the funds, volunteer labor, materials and plants. Eagle Scout candidate, Joey Zedan, of Troop 572 has accepted the project as his Eagle Scout project. The project was completed on Friday April 2nd, 2004.

The project was divided into three major phases:

  • Design, build and place two picnic tables
  • Design and build a patio with 2’x2’ slate pavers
  • Design and build gardens, places plants that create a butterfly habitat

Financial support for this project was provided by the Horizon PTA, Tart Lumber, Blue Mont Nursery, Cosco Price Club and SAMs.
